Sing to the Lord,
for he is highly exalted.
Both horse and driver
he has hurled into the sea.”

The Miriam Cup offers a unique opportunity for women to participate in bringing a beautiful legend to life. The Midrash tells us that on the sixth day of creation, just seconds before Shabbat first entered the world, G-d created the miracles that in later times would save the Jewish people from hardship and destruction. However, of all the miracles, the most beautiful, the most powerful, was the miracle of Miriam’s Well. Miriam’s Well, according to legend, would flow with miraculously healing water whenever women versed in its secrets sang to it. It was this song that saved the Children of Israel as they trekked through the desert providing them with water and healing during their 40 years of wandering. The legend further describes the cup that Miriam used in ministering to the sick with the miraculous waters of this well. It was silver and gold, inlaid with precious stones and elegant carvings. It was a cup that was as much of an offering as it was a useful utensil. Miriam the Prophetess is depicted here playing the Song of the Sea on her tambourine.
