An etrog, or citron (Citrus medica), is an ancient type of citrus fruit that is a forerunner of many modern citrus cultivars. It is one of the four species - the etrog is taken in hand and held or waved during specific portions of the holiday prayers. Special care is given to selecting an etrog for the performance of the Sukkot rituals, as well as for protecting it throughout the week of the Sukkot festival, usually in a special etrog box.
