This piece was designed in 1928. It is made of sterling silver and ornamented with filigree work and garnets. It is 9” high.
In Yehia's silver filigree case for the traditional scroll of Esther, he imitates splendid Torah coverings, featuring domed and triple-tiered forms and decorations, midway between crown and Temple steps. The reliefs portray scenes from the story of the Biblical Book of Esther; set in the third year of Achashverosh, the King of Persia, and telling a story of palace intrigue and genocide thwarted by the Jewish queen of Persia:
- The top portrays two symmetrical scenes: Mordechai begging Esther to ask the King to spare the Jewish People, and Esther begging the King to spare them.
- The bottom left scene portrays the King reading the Book of Chronicles. “On that night the King could not sleep and he commanded to bring the Book of Records of the Chronicles, and they were read before the King.”
- The bottom center scene portrays Haman leading Mordechai on the horse. “Thus, shall it be done unto the man whom the King delighteth to honor.”
- The final scene on the bottom right takes poetic license. It portrays Haman jailed behind a barred window, his foot shackled to a ball and chain. He is holding his forehead, knowing his fate was to be hung on the tree he had prepared for Mordechai, in his own backyard. He is probably recalling the wise words of his wife: “...Since Mordecai, before whom your downfall has started, is of Jewish origin, you cannot stand against him—you will surely come to ruin!”
